Overview

Large communities can feel noisy. A member who wants to follow family or coworkers has no simple way to separate them from everyone else. BuddyPress User Circles gives each member lists of other members, which they can create and manage themselves. Those circles can then be used to filter the activity stream, so people see updates from the group they care about at that moment.

Site owners keep control of how the feature works. You can limit circle creation by user role, decide whether members may add only friends or any member, and set privacy and visibility rules. You can also choose where circles appear, either as a top-level tab or under the friends component. It works with BuddyBoss and BP Nouveau, and suits communities that want better organization among members.

Features

  • Multiple circles per member: Members can create several circles, such as Family, Close Friends or Colleagues, to organize the people in their network into personal groupings.
  • Activity stream filtering: Activity streams can be filtered by circle, so members focus on updates and interactions from a specific group of people instead of the whole community.
  • Circle notifications: Members receive notifications when they are added to or removed from a circle. The notification settings can be customized to fit your community.
  • Role-based creation limits: Admins can limit circle creation by user role, which gives precise control over who is able to form circles on the site.
  • Flexible circle placement: Choose whether circles appear as a top-level tab or under the friends component, so the feature fits the layout of your BuddyPress theme.
  • Privacy and visibility controls: Admins and users can define who can see and access circles, which helps protect member privacy while keeping interactions within the community.
  • Friends-only or any member: A restriction setting decides whether members can add only their friends to circles or any member of the community.
  • Default circles and custom emails: New members receive default circles when they register, and administrators can customize the notification emails to match the tone and branding of the site.

Best for

  • BuddyPress communities that want member-managed groups
  • Niche social networks and professional communities
  • Site owners using BuddyBoss or BP Nouveau
