WPMU DEV WP Smush Pro

Large image files slow pages down, and fixing them by hand takes time. WPMU DEV WP Smush Pro compresses images while keeping visual quality, and it can run in bulk across your existing library or automatically as new files are uploaded. It also supports images up to 256MB, which suits high-resolution photography and graphics.

Beyond compression, the plugin converts JPG and PNG files to WebP and AVIF, resizes images to fit their display areas, lazy loads images and preloads critical ones above the fold. It works across a multisite network and can optimize images outside the media library, including whole folders. That makes it a fit for a single blog or a group of client sites.

Features

• Bulk and automatic smushing: Optimize many images in one pass, or let the plugin compress files automatically as you upload them, so the media library stays lean without repeated manual work.
• WebP and AVIF conversion: Convert standard JPG and PNG files into WebP and AVIF, which are lighter formats that load faster in the browser.
• Global CDN delivery: Images can be served through a 119-point global CDN with 50GB of bandwidth, so visitors receive media from locations across the world.
• Support for large files: Handle high-resolution images up to 256MB, which helps photographers and designers who work with big source files.
• Lazy loading and preload: Defer offscreen images until they are needed, and preload the important images above the fold to help with Largest Contentful Paint.
• Auto resize to fit: Images are scaled to match their display areas, which avoids loading oversized files where a smaller version will do.
• Folders and non-WordPress images: Extend compression beyond the media library to images stored elsewhere, including entire folders, for wider control over optimization.
• EXIF and PNG controls: Choose whether to keep or remove EXIF metadata, and convert PNG images to lossy JPEGs when a smaller file size makes sense.

Best for

• Bloggers and photographers with large image libraries
• Agencies managing image-heavy client websites
• WordPress multisite networks needing consistent image optimization
