Overview
Multilingual sites hold a lot of translated material: posts, pages, custom post types, taxonomies and string translations. Moving that content between a staging site and a live site, or sending it to a translation team, usually means tedious copying or database work. This extension replaces that with an export file and an import step handled inside WordPress.
It works with WPML's translation management system, so the language information stays attached to the content when it moves. It handles manual translations, professional translation services and automatic translations managed through WPML. The interface is simple enough for non-technical users, and it can process large amounts of multilingual content in bulk, which suits sites with plenty of language data.
Features
- Export and import translations: Transfer multilingual content between WordPress sites, including posts, pages, custom post types and taxonomies, with translation data kept consistent.
- Works with all WPML translation types: Handles manual translations, professional translation services and automatic translations that are managed through WPML, so it fits different translation workflows.
- String translation support: String translations travel along with posts and pages, so interface text and other strings arrive in the same state as on the original site.
- Backup and restore files: Create export files of your translated content to keep as backups, then use them to restore or duplicate a multilingual site.
- Translation Management integration: Coordinates with the WPML Translation Management dashboard, which helps when you handle translation projects and updates across sites.
- Custom content structures: Exports and imports language data for custom post types and taxonomies, which helps on complex multilingual sites with unusual content setups.
- Language-specific URLs preserved: Multilingual URLs are maintained during migrations, so translated pages keep their language-specific addresses after the move.
- Bulk processing: Processes large amounts of multilingual content in one operation, which suits sites with extensive language data and saves repeated manual work.
Best for
- Developers moving multilingual sites between environments
- Site owners who want backups of translated content
- Agencies working with translation teams on WPML sites
Changelog
Version 5.2.0 — 21 October 2026
- Improved Dependable re-imports that keep translations attached to their originals, with variations and categories kept.
- New Re-imports are dependable: importing the same file twice, two imports running at once and malformed translation groups are all handled.
- Improved The slug-fixing step after an import reads only the imported posts instead of the whole site.
- Fixed A translation imported in a later run attaches to its original.
- Fixed The WordPress importer no longer merges a translation that shares its original's title and date.
- Fixed An "Update existing products" CSV import keeps translated variations under their translated parent products.
- Fixed A WP All Import post imported as Published keeps its categories.
- Fixed WooCommerce CSV imports assign the translated attribute terms to translated products.
- Fixed Importing per-language WooCommerce CSV files without WooCommerce Multilingual creates the product in every language, not only the default one.
- Fixed Re-runs, scheduled imports and WP-CLI imports through WP All Import keep the intended status instead of arriving published.
- Fixed The final-status step handles published, scheduled and group-less rows, and the wizard no longer recommends "published".
- Fixed Imports run through WP-CLI or a trigger send only the originals flagged for translation to Translate Everything.
- Fixed Inline terms import correctly: a duplicated child term gets the translated parent, and existing terms are no longer deleted or re-labelled.
- Fixed After an import, a term shared by posts in several languages is copied into each language and the unused original is removed, instead of being moved into one of the languages.
- Fixed An import whose declared language code matches an inactive duplicate language says so, instead of silently placing items there.
- Fixed With WP Import Export, export requests no longer leave WPML's language switched to All languages.
- Fixed The WP All Export Migrate flow exports each reserved _wpml_import_* column once.
- Fixed Built and released together with WPML 5.2.0, with the same shared library version.
- Other Read the release announcement for WPML 5.2 for the full story behind this version.
